Considering therapy can bring up all kinds of questions. Here are some of the most common.
What happens in the first session?
In the first consultation you will share what is bringing you to therapy right now. I will listen. If you aren't exactly sure, that's okay too. I will help you to articulate that. My goal is to understand how to help you feel better. You will get a sense for how I work and what it's like to be with me.
Will treatment be confidential?
Anything you say in session is completely confidential. The exceptions are the following: A) You tell me you are going to seriously harm yourself. B) You tell me you are going to seriously harm someone else. C) You tell me of active child abuse or neglect. I am bound by law to keep you and others safe. I will talk to you first and we will discuss the next steps to keep whoever is involved safe. The other exception is if you choose to use insurance benefits. I will need to provide a diagnosis. Periodically insurance companies will want to discuss progress which means we will have a conversation about confidentiality at that point.
What is Creative Arts Therapy?
Sometimes experience transcends language and the creative arts therapies give voice to and provide a way of processing those experiences. I am a Drama therapist which means I am trained to use drama and theater techniques to facilitate growth. This can be through role playing, storytelling, creative writing, or dramatic play. I tend to integrate art and music as well when I use creative interventions. You don't need to be a creative type to benefit from these methods. It's for anyone who is curious and open to it.
What is Psychoanalysis?
Simply put- it's an approach that focuses on unconscious and conscious processes of the mind. Psychoanalysis is an interpersonal process of making meaning together of the behavior, stories, or dreams that you talk about. Distress is often rooted in relational patterns that began long ago and are interfering with the present. There is a focus on our relationship in that we work collaboratively to understand what is going on between us which is often helpful in understanding how you are with others in the world.
How much does it cost?
My fee is $200 per 45 minute session. I accept payment by cash, check, Venmo, Zelle or credit card. We will discuss this during your consultation.
Do you accept insurance?
I am an out of network provider. If you have insurance that offers out-of-network coverage, you may be reimbursed for some portion of the session fee. When you contact your insurance company, ask what percentage is covered and whether there is a deductable. I will provide you with the proper paperwork at the end of the month that you will submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.
What if I need medication?
I have working relationships with several psychiatrists who I can connect you with if we feel that an evaluation makes sense. I am not a doctor and cannot prescribe medication. It can be helpful to coordinate treatment with another practitioner to provide you with the specific help that you need.
What if I have more questions?
I offer the option of a free, fifteen-minute phone consultation prior to our initial meeting. Call me at 917.449.7477 to set up an appointment.
